Woofum Stix
How to make your own Woofum Stick.
We are asked all the time “Can’t I just make one?” The simple answer is “yes”.
Making your own woofum stick can be fun yet challenging for a novice. The most difficult
part is drilling straight holes into your handle.
CAUTION: Some aluminum alloys contain lead (Pb). Unfortunately most suppliers do
not know if their product contains lead or not. You will need to do some research
yourself to determine if the product you are purchasing contains lead or not. Woofum
Stix are lead free.
Equipment Needed
●
|
Drill Press (at least 10”) - Hand drilling will not drill straight holes into the handle
|
●
|
11/64” drill bit (3/16” rod) OR 15/64” drill bit (1/4” rod)
|
●
|
Chop Saw with fine tooth blade (If buying aluminum rods longer than 3ft. You will also need metal cutting blade for your chop saw or a hacksaw.)
|
Supplies Needed
●
|
3/16” or 1/4” Dia. Aluminum Rod 3ft long
|
●
|
1.25” Dia. X 1.5” long wood dowel (used for the cooking tip)
|
●
|
3/4” Dia. X 8” long wood dowel (handle)
|
Assembly Instructions
- Cut the aluminum rod into 3ft lengths (if necessary)
- Cut the 1.25” dia. Wood dowel into 1.5” lengths
- Cut the 3/4” dowel into 8” lengths
- Sand the ends of each dowel
- Router the 1.25” dowel along one edge with the 1/4” round over bit to create a nice
rounded cooking end. Router the other end with the 1/8” round over bit - this is
the end that will be attached to the rod
- Router the 3/4” dowel on both edges using the 1/4” round over bit
- Drill a 1” hole into the 1.25” dowel on the end with the 1/8” round over. You will
need to use the 11/64” drill bit for 3/16” aluminum rod OR the 15/64” drill bit for
1/4” aluminum rod. Make sure you’re centered!
- Drill a 2” hole in the 3/4” dowel for the handle. Either end will work. Make sure
to use the proper sized bit. To make sure your hole is drilled straight, you may
need to use a level to hold your handle against while drilling or build a vertical
jig to hold the handle straight for drilling. A hole which is only slightly off will
be exaggerated by the rod. Make sure your hole is centered & straight! - This is
the hardest part.
- Now place a small drop of gorilla glue in each hole and firmly tap the handle and
cooking tip onto the rod. Be careful NOT to bend the rod!
- Soak the cooking tip in vegetable oil for 12-24 hours.
